Namyang

Stream water is flowing in the valley situated in the middle of Bipa Mountain. It was called ‘Golgye’ as there were more valleys and streams than other villages. Presently, it is called ‘Namyang’ which means the south that is the warmest in Ulleungdo. It is the area that snow is melt earliest in Ulleungdo.

Mt. Bipa(Guksusan)

Mt. Bipa(Guksusan)

Located at the back of Namyangri village. One side of the mountain looks like rolled up noodles of a Korean mandolin. There is a legend that it was called ‘Mt. Bipa(Mandolin)’ as King Uhae of Usanguk brought 12 maids and let them play Mandolin everyday to mourn the death of his queen, Poongminyeo, who dies and left a daughter.

Tonggumi

Climbing up on the Naesujeon Sunrise Observatory, Jukdo Island, Gwaneumdo Island and Seommok are coming into the sight. You can get refreshed by the wide stretching horizon and purely clean sea.You can enjoy 1 hour and 30 minute tracking from here to Bukmyeong Seokpo Village.

Saja Bawi

Saja Bawi

King of Silla dispatched Yisabu, the sovereign of Gangreung, to subjugate Usanguk. The Silla warship had a wooden lion at the bow of the boat. King Uhae of Usanguk surrendered, taking off a war helmet when he was threatened that the lion would open fire from its mouth and those lions would exterminate all the people in Usanguk.

Though Usanguk perished, the legend is still heard that the wooden lion became the Saja(lion) Bawi(rock) and the war helmet taken off by King Uhae became the present Tugu(helmet)bong.

Namseo Sunset Observatory

You can feel the magnificence when you see the wide horizon as well as steep cliffs and fantastic rocks and stones along the Sataegumi seaside. Especially the sunset is very beautiful from this spot. The penis rock is standing eminently in front of the observatory and in the opposite hill there’s a Saeksi(Lady rock)bawi that’s bashfully turning back from the penis rock. From old days, there has been a legend that the couple who doesn’t have children can have a child by making a wish before the penis rock and the couple can get more intimate by confessing love before the rock.

Namseori Tumulus

Designated as Gyeongsangbukdo monument No.72.

Namseori Tumulus

Located 1.5km away from Namyang bus station. As there’s a good taste water spring, Chanmulnaegi, nearby, it is good place to stop and rest. This area is a site of remains that have the most tumulus.

Tombs are made up of the flat stylobate on which the deceased body is laid and the mound is covered with stones.

It is Ulleungdo’ unique Mongdol seaside and good for family quality time. The summer scenery such moonlight which is shining and reflecting to black pebbles and white waves coming to the seashore is beautiful enough to attract visitors. 1km seashore. Depth of sea 1~3 meters.

As it is smaller than Taeha and there’s a lot of yellow earth, it was called Small Hwangtogumi. It is called as Hak(crane)Po because there is a rock which looks like a crane.

Seongha Shrine

At the time of King Taejong of Joseon, Kim In Woo arrived in Ulleungdo with two warships to return Ulleungdo residents to main land. When he was sleeping after completing the mission, he dreamt that the god in the sea ordered him to leave a man and a woman in the island. Kim In Woo returned leaving the two people in the island.

In several years, he was dispatched to Ulleungdo with a mission to search and patrol the island, and there he found the two people became skeletons hugging each other. He built a shrine to comfort them.

Since then, a sacrificial rite was carried out regularly on March 1st by lunar calendar every year. When a new boat is launched, a sacrificial rite is performed without fail to make a wish for safety and prosperity.

Taehari Gwangseomyeong Gakseokmun

It is an engraved stone without trimming. Son Ju Yeong who served as Owijang built it in April 1890 to remember people who contributed themselves in the exploitation period.

Daepunggam Aromatic Tree Inhabitants (Natural Monument No.49)

A hole was made in this tree to tie a sailing boat, which needed wind to sail.
It is called Daepunggam as it is the place to wait for the wind to blow.

Taeha Hwangto(yellow earth)gul

Taeha Hwangto(yellow earth)gul

In Joseon times, the yellow earth from this area was collected and sent to the government. The government sent Samcheokyeongjang(government official) to this island once three years to patrol the island. It is said that the Hwangto(yellow earth) and aromatic tree were collected as the proof of patrol.

It is called Hwangtogumi as there’s a great deal of hwangto in the cave.
